I still want to build a hot rod with an air-cooled aircraft flat eight/twelve, low hp/displacement be damned.

The Merlin is a V12 and is liquid cooled.

I could see this sitting on some stretched frame rails in the front of a '32 Ford.

Still close, conceptually.

It's all about the radials!

close enough?

I'm well aware of aircraft engine'd cars, the Beast in particular. I said *air-cooled* and *flat*. Two common crank Continental flat sixes or a Lycoming IO-720 in a car with a narrow hood, and cylinders visible on the sides. Not a huge car - a medium sized car. Something like a La Salle:
Modified either to use the little stylistic vents as individual cylinder intakes or replaced entirely with a custom cap on the cylinder protruding through the side.
I think you'll find that's nothing like The Beast.

Right? Exposed cylinders out the side to some extent and a unique sound = precisely what this is about.
Astronomical torque and light weight are just nice bonuses.

Yes, definitively.

If I wanted to make a radial vehicle, I'd try to find/copy a Guiberson diesel radial and put it in an International D or K truck.

That engine + Saab Sonett

Subaru EA81 engine. Precision motor builders out there getting 130HP..And could sell the redrive and put that sucker in my truck. Whooa stocklook.
And a Corvair engine.

More research seems to show that it's actually powered by a propeller, instead of the engine being connected to the drive train. That's a little disappointing.

take this and make it just a wee bit longer.... end up with front mid engine awesome on three wheels

If I remember correctly, you get a HUGE pass in LeMons for using an air cooled aircraft engine...or maybe its just radial.

Still pretty badass though.

I dunno - the big thing about the Corvair engine is that it's a six, while I would want eight or more. It's also not nearly preposterous enough-looking. The Scoob would be okay if doubled up, but the big advantage of the proper aircraft models is that they have detachable jugs and a multipiece crankcase/etc. - very easy (comparatively) to frankenstein-extend them/combine them into arbitrary numbers of cylinders.

Water cooling?!
*recoils, hissing like a vampire*
Nope, if I'm going to build an idiotic hot rod with a flat twelve, it'll be with polished finny cylinders and dual ignition, danke.

The goggomobil powered by a russian aircraft radial *was* connected to the drivetrain.

Yep, the MR2 with a 5-cylinder from a WWII trainer... which required a 3-stage power conversion including the rear drive from a Honda Goldwing. And kept snapping shafts.

wonder if airflow from a car's motion will be sufficient to keep it cool. I mean planes taxi for a fair while so I assume yes. But could be a unique problem.
"sorry officer, if I don't got 108mph the engine overheats!"

My thought was to have an over-top or under-bottom plenum fed by a nose fan, leaving enough of the cylinder exposed to get the look right while still feeding one side. Conceptually similar to the 5hp B&S that's been around forever:

I've not heard of somebody putting an EA81 back into a Subaru. The power-weight ratio was barely adequate anyway..
